When I was in 5th grade Mrs. Shut taught me the difference between Can I and May I.

-I said, "Can I use the bathroom?"

-She said, "I don't know Can you?"

-She said, "yes you May go to the bathroom."

In other words you are Allowed or Permitted to go to the bathroom.
